Consuelo H. Wilkins, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science

Dr. Consuelo H. Wilkins is an assistant professor in the Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science at Washington University School of Medicine. She is a clinical investigator in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the Center for Depression and Neuroimaging. She is also the medical director of Barnes Jewish Extended Care.
Dr. Wilkins’ current research focuses on cognitive and depressive symptoms associated with vitamin D deficiency in older adults. Although vitamin D deficiency in the elderly is common, it is often unrecognized. Her recent studies have found that persons with vitamin D deficiency have more depressive symptoms and worse performance on some cognitive measures. She is currently examining the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and hippocampal volumes.
Dr. Wilkins is very active in mentoring medical students and residents. She currently serves as president of the local chapter of the National Medical Association where she is actively involved in efforts to eliminate health disparities. She also writes a monthly column for a local newspaper.
Dr. Wilkins is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center and a fellowship in geriatrics at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Wilkins also earned a master of science degree in clinical investigation at Washington University.
