M. Bernadette McGuinness, MD, MRCP
Senior Clinical Research Fellow
Department of Geriatric Medicine
Queen's University of Belfast

Dr. Bernadette McGuinness is a research fellow at Queen’s University of Belfast in Ireland. Prior to winning the Paul B. Beeson Career Development Award, she was a specialist registrar in a hospital setting, where she pursued a variety of management, clinical, and academic activities on the General Medical and Geriatric Wards.

Dr. McGuinness’s earlier research focused on neuropsychological changes and genetics in early Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. The study she is now undertaking involves the enzyme ß-secretase, which was discovered to be elevated in patients with Alzheimer’s. Now Dr. McGuinness will build on those results, undertaking a major study of people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is thought to be a precursor of Alzheimer’s disease. Activity of ß-secretase will be assessed over time in MCI patients and detailed memory assessments and neuroimaging will be carried out. The ultimate goal of the research is to develop a relevant marker of Alzheimer’s in peripherally accessed blood samples.

Dr. McGuinness received her medical degree from Queen’s University of Belfast in 1996. She also completed a research fellowship in neuroscience gaining a postgraduate MD in 2006 at the same institution, conducting research and teaching medical students in geriatric medicine.
